Hi Jacob, I don't know if this would help, but one thing I would try is resetting the preference for macro warnings. Go to Word menu Preferences Security Macro Security uncheck the box for enabling the warning (or check it if it's not checked) hit OK close Pref window quit Word open Word and see if it resolves the issue.
If not, or if you want to setting reversed, try the other option (check or uncheck the box, the opposite of what you did before) and see if that helps. Beyond that, I'm wondering if your IT dept installed/set something to not allow macros. I have an Excel 2011 for Mac workbook (.xlsm with macros) that had been running fine under Yosemite. Now that I have upgraded to El Capitan, at random times Excel goes into a 'not responding' mode and the only thing I can do is force Quit Excel. To help prevent macros that contain viruses from contaminating your system, by default Office for Mac displays a warning message whenever you try to open a document that contains a macro. This message appears regardless of whether the macro actually contains a virus.
